Less than a week after being sacked by York City Jackie McNamara has been appointed as chief executive of the National League outfit.

In a bizarre twist the club issued a lunchtime statement confirming the news.

McNamara took over as manager last November but despite York’s relegation from the Football League he was left in charge of the bid to bounce back from the National League.

Eleven days ago events took a strange turn when the club announced that a positive result was needed away to Braintree if McNamara was to continue in the dug out.

Following a 1-1 draw it was announced that the former Partick Thistle and Dundee United boss would be stepping down but after today’s statement McNamara will be charged with appointing his successor.

Explaining the appointment of the new chief executive York announced: “Jackie will focus on all operational aspects of the Club with specific attention paid to the development of a communication strategy, effective both internally and externally, administration management, aspects of the Academy, aspects of the Foundation and commerciality to name just a few of the areas of his involvement.

When required by the First Team Manager, assistance will also be provided by the Chairman and Chief Executive, especially in relation to certain financial aspects of the playing budget. It is imperative that we support the First Team Manager by taking away the non-playing issues so he can focus on results.

It has become abundantly clear that a full-time Chief Executive is required at York City Football Club and Jackie is keen to implement and conclude the work we began to overhaul the Club from top to bottom confirmed in the Chairman’s Statement in April this year.

“The appointment of Jackie McNamara will also allow the Chairman, who will still be responsible for Football Club strategy, to focus more of his time to JM Packaging Ltd, which has seen substantial growth over the last six months, with the successful gaining of significant new customers.

This will enable the Chairman to ensure there is financial security and longevity for both JM Packaging and York City Football Club.”

Shortly before the news about McNamara was announced York revealed that assistant manager Simon Donnelly had left the club by mutual consent.
