Jackie McNamara’s future as manager of York City is in the balance tonight after a 1-1 draw away to Braintree Town.

An 88th minute penalty from Lee Barnard earned the home side a point leaving the definition of a ‘positive result’ up for debate.

McNamara took charge of York in November but was unable to prevent them from being relegated to the Nation League where they were fifth from bottom going into today’s match.

In midweek York took the unprecedented action of announcing that McNamara would leave the club if they were unable to get a positive result.

Defining what a positive result may be will be the guessing game over the weekend with today’s point edging them up one place.

Simon Heslop got York off to a perfect start with a fifth minute goal but with two minutes left to play Braintree snatched a point when Barnard equalised from the penalty spot.

Discussing his position ahead of the match McNamara said: “I tendered my resignation but, to give an honest explanation, there was nothing in place in terms of taking the team for the weekend, so I said why don’t I stay for the game on Saturday and, if I get a reaction, I will stay but, if not, we will announce it and the chairman will have a lot of CVs on his desk and have time to prepare for the FA Cup game if I’m not here.

A positive result means everything in terms of performance, passion and fight. We could draw the game or be in front and lose something that’s out of our control, but I’ll know, in my heart, if what I’m looking for is there.

If I see them doing the things I want, I will stay. If not, I will leave. Really, we need both a performance and a result to get the monkey off our back in terms of away results.”
