It’s apparently the fixture that the whole world was waiting for but Chris Sutton wasn’t impressed.

The fact that Liverpool were playing Manchester United in a Champions League week was a bit of a give away to the current status of both clubs. As was the 0-0 scoreline.

Sky Sports gave it the full treatment as they hyped the fixture up beyond belief but with Jose Mourinho determined to protect his image a bus parking exercise was always on the cards.

The match was apparently as exciting as it sounds with Sutton not slow to deliver his verdict.

As a warm up to the Celtic v Borussia Monchengladbach match tomorrow night the Anfield ‘showdown’ was a non-event.

Jurgen Klopp knows a thing or two about the Champions League and wasn’t prepared to argue with Sutton’s cutting assessment.

After the match the Liverpool boss admitted: “I am not frustrated but I am not happy with the performance. No-one will show this game in 10 or 20 years but we could have played better.

“It was a hectic game, interrupted here and there, but we lost patience with our passing game. The attitude of my team was really good. We were ready to fight but when you can play better, you have to.”

With his side sitting in seventh place Mourinho said: “It is not the result we wanted but it is a positive result. It is a result that stops a direct opponent getting three points at home, so not a bad result.

“The game was difficult for both teams but for longer periods it was more difficult for them than us.”

The draw leaves Liverpool in fourth place, two points behind joint leaders Manchester City and Spurs who both drew at the weekend.
