Blundering Alan Muir will take charge of tomorrow night’s match between Ross County and Celtic.

Muir was behind the goal at Hampden in April 2015 when he failed to notice Josh Meekings punch clear a netbound header from Leigh Griffiths.

Despite being specifically chosen for that role to help in those type of incidents the second assistant, along with Steven McLean and Frank Connor failed to notice Meekings’ use of his hand.

Muir’s only Celtic game this season was the home win over Alloa in the Betfred Cup but he did referee three away matches last season, the most controversial being the early season win at Fir Park where Celtic were denied two clear cut penalties in a match decided by Nadir Ciftci’s early strike.

Asked about the penalty incidents after the match Ronny Deila said: “It is a big deal, of course it’s a big deal. It was clear handball. I try to think that there is 38 games and you give and take and hopefully it is going to even out. I don’t speak so much with the referees.

I said it was a penalty but what can I do? What can they do? I could threaten them but, no. I have no problem with referees here in Scotland but sometimes they make mistakes as well and today they did that.”

Mark McGhee took a more confrontational view of those incidents.

I really have no idea what you’re talking about,” he replied when asked about the penalty claims. “Was there two penalties I missed? Was it 3-0? Or did they miss them both? Oh right, they weren’t given, I see. Look, you could go on all day talking about those sorts of things.”

McLean will referee Saturday’s Aberdeen v Celti match.
