Mark Warburton has dismissed speculation linking him with the vacant manager’s job at Wigan but welcomed the opportunity to divert attention away from his side’s 1-1 draw with St Johnstone.

After apparently closing the gap with Celtic at Hampden on Sunday Warbo’s men are now nine points behind the league leaders having played a game more.

Three home draws from five matches, the failure of summer signings to improve the team and Warbo’s deluded post match comments all contributed to the chorus of boos that greeted the final whistle last night.

Fortunately there was the Wigan story this morning to deflect away from his side’s performance with Warbo keen to go into detail about the ‘story’.

“I am absolutely bemused where these reports come from,” he claimed. “I am amazed they even make the papers.

“I didn’t actually deal with David (Sharpe, the Wigan chairman who was involved in the transfers of James Tavernier, Martyn Waghorn and Rob Kiernan to Ibrox). I have no relationship there at all.

“With all respect to Wigan I have no idea where the rumour has come from. I am the manager of Rangers, I would never talk about another club or another job. I am just amazed that it even makes the tabloids.”

Looking ahead to his long term Ibrox plans the former city trader added: “We look at where the club has been the last four or five years, rightly or wrongly, and the club needs to move forward on strong foundations.

“That is our task and our aim, and working closely with the chairman and the board and everyone involved with the club and if we can do that and put the club on sound footings then we will be in a good place.

“I just don’t think we can afford to move too recklessly and try to move too quickly without those strong foundations.”

Warbo also talked up the prospects of bringing in new players during the January transfer window despite the company being unable to publish their accounts to June 2016 with no sign of an AGM for investors to question the board.
