Six weeks after getting hammered at Celtic Park Mark Warburton has finally admitted that there is a gulf between his club and Celtic- in terms of budget!

With a seven point advantage over the Ibrox club in the SPFL, plus a game in hand, it’s obvious to all that there is a gulf between the two Glasgow clubs. September’s 5-1 victory simply confirmed that Celtic are the better team.

After a season of victories over clubs like Dumbarton, Raith Rovers and Morton the top flight has been a brutal and unforgiving arena for Warburton.

Marquee signings Joey Barton and Niko Kranjcar have sunk without trace while record signing Joe Garner certainly doesn’t seem to be three times as good as Moussa Dembele.

The reality of life in the top flight was exposed during Celtic’s 5-1 win but rather than face up to the truth the former city trader preferred to look for excuses.

In terms of budget, I would imagine the gap is two or three times,” Warbo said clutching at straws to explain the 5-1 defeat.

They are playing in the Champions League, gaining valuable European experience and they have a very good squad packed with international players.

They have added some very good attacking individuals in Scott Sinclair and Moussa Dembele and they are proven young talents. I said in the first press conference that Brendan, having worked with him, would bring a level of organisation and belief, which I am sure he has done.

It is the fine margins in football. Whether it is belief, unity, an aspect of play, whatever it may be, sometimes it falls into place. That is how the game works.

They are a good team but I have total and utter belief in my own squad of players and that’s all I can affect.”
