According to a report in the Daily Record Scott Brown is close to performing a u-turn over his retirement from international football.

The Celtic skipper announced his decision to step down from Scotland duty at the start of the season with the full agreement of Gordon Strachan.

Brendan Rodgers has been the big beneficiary of that move with Brown in sparkling form at the start of the season- driving Celtic into the group phase of the Champions League and a commanding lead in the SPFL.

In contrast Scotland have made a disastrous start to their World Cup qualifying campaign with next month’s match with England viewed as a make or break fixture for Strachan.

The Scotland boss has never hidden his admiration for Brown and has remained in contact with his former skipper throughout the season.

Now, according to the Record, the duo are close to teaming up to face England.

The report claims: “Record Sport can reveal the Celtic skipper is set to be named in Gordon Strachan’s squad for the make-or-break showdown with England, despite announcing his international retirement four months ago.

Brown made that decision in order to concentrate on extending his club career under new Parkhead boss Brendan Rodgers.

But now, after returning to full fitness and following a number of outstanding big-game performances, the 31-year-old is reconsidering his position.

And with Strachan losing a number of his most trusted midfield operators – and facing a win-or-bust qualifier against the Auld Enemy – Brown is ready to make himself available.”

With Celtic’s packed schedule covering Champions League fixtures, the Betfred Cup Final and the SPFL it’s difficult to see the logic in Brown making an international return to a qualification campaign that looks dead in the water ahead of a visit to the number one seeds in the group.

Strachan will name his squad next week for the November 11 clash at Wembley.
