English Premier League clubs will discuss Safe Standing at a meeting this week.

Celtic introduced an area of safe standing at the start of this season and have had a number of clubs contacting them to see how it is operating.

Standing at top flight football matches has been banned for over 20 years but new technology has allowed German style rail standing areas to be introduced.

Champions League matches have to be played in all-seater stadiums with the system being used by Celtic able to switch between standing and sitting depending on the fixture.

According to a report on the BBC website: “The Premier League will discuss the issue of safe-standing areas at a routine meeting between the 20 top-flight clubs next week.

There is no suggestion a decision will be taken but it is understood a few clubs are keen to discuss the matter.

Many, however, are not yet sure of their opinion and the Premier League is conscious that it is a sensitive topic.”

A number of English clubs have had problems caused by supporters standing in seated areas with viewing positions far from ideal.

Introducing safe standing areas could solve a number of problems, allowing fans to stand and bringing greater safety and comfort to existing seated areas.

Celtic’s standing area is for 2,900 fans and could be increased at the end of the season.
