Leigh Griffiths has relived his moment of hesitation at Wembley that could have put Scotland level with England.

Trailing to Daniel Sturridge’s 24th minute header the Scots had already missed one gilt edged chance when Grant Hanley headed high and wide from a Robert Snodgrass corner.

On the half hour mark Griffiths took control of a wayward Wayne Rooney pass and suddenly it was two-on-one as the Celtic striker was joined by Robert Snodgrass 30 yards from goal.

A simple pass to the left could have teed up the Hull midfielder for a pot at goal but Griffiths elected to go solo with Joe Hart easily collecting his 25 yard drive.

It was one of four great chances that Scotland had before Adam Lalana put the game out of sight with the Celtic striker first to admit that he had a massive mistake.

I was disappointed with myself for that,” Griffiths said reflecting on that chance. “I heard Snoddy shouting but the goal opened up and I thought: “Why not?”

I thought the midfielder was tracking him, but when I turned round I saw he wasn’t.

That is part of my game that I need to improve. He was disappointed I didn’t slip him in, it was one of those things.”

Griffiths was starting his first Scotland match in over three years as Gordon Strachan ditched his policy of playing with one target man.

For 50 minutes Scotland were the better side but around goal England were far more clinical with the Scots defence cut apart by three headers that left Craig Gordon helpless and the Strachan regime on the brink.
