Eoghan O’Connell is set to join Kilmarnock on loan in January.

The young defender made a big impact at the start of the season when he was drafted in to play in the Champions League qualifiers against Astana and Hapoel Beer Sheva.

Since the arrival of Kolo Toure and return to fitness of Jozo Simunovic and Erik Sviatchenko his chances have been limited with Killie able to offer a realistic chance of first team football.

O’Connell, an Irish u-21 cap, had two loan spells last season, at Oldham and Cork City but both interrupted by injury.

Neil Lennon gave the defender his debut in April 2014 against Ross County but the following season he only made occasional appearances as Ronny Deila placed his trust in Virgil van Dijk and Jason Denayer.

Last season’s loan deals turned out to disappointing but in recent seasons Jackson Irvine and Stewart Findlay have enjoyed regular first team football with Kilmarnock.

Celtic already have a number of players out on loan with Michael Duffy at Dundee, Aidan Nesbitt and Jamie Lindsay with Morton, Joe Thomson at Dumbarton, Colin McCabe with Stenhousemuir, Paul McMullan at Dunfermline and Fiacre Kelleher at Peterhead.

Further south Scott Allan is with Rotherham and Saidy Janko at Barnsley.
