Manchester City have joined the race for Virgil van Dijk.

According to a report in the Daily Mail the former Celtic defender is being lined up to replace Vincent Kompany.

City will know all about the defender from his partnership with Jason Denayer during the 2014/15 season.

Celtic’s SPFL and League Cup winning side was based around that defensive partnership in front of Craig Gordon.

Kompany has been plagued with injuries for two seasons with van Dijk looked on as a replacement ready to step in straight away.

With Liverpool and Everton showing genuine interest it looks like van Dijk could be sold in January despite the noises coming out of Southampton.

Bidding is likely to start at £40m for the former Groningen defender with Celtic due at least a 10% slice of the profit Saints make on the player who they paid £12m for 15 months ago.

Van Dijk signed a new six year contract at Southampton in May but that was mainly to ensure that they get the market rate when he is sold on.
