Dave King has earned a three month stay of execution from a £1m claim from Sports Direct.

The Sevco chairman was due in the dock yesterday over claims that he has been backing a supporters boycott of goods sold by Rangers Retail.

That company was set up in 2012 by founding fathers Charles Green and Mike Ashley and instantly gave the new new club credibility and nationwide exposure while the team toiled against Peterhead and Annan Athletic.

Since King’s regime change in March 2015 the Rangers Retail deal has been blamed for everything at Ibrox with the club effectively pulling the plug on promotions during the summer.

Under instruction from Mr King, who was described as a glib and shameless liar by a South African judge, there was no launch for the new kits to celebrate their first ever season in the top flight of Scottish football.

That action and King’s constant references to the retail deal has brought the matter to a head with the full two day hearing scheduled for March.

Reporting on the Sports Direct claim The Herald reveals: “In particular, Mr King, on behalf of The Rangers Football Club Ltd, has repeatedly encouraged the supporters boycott – set up as a protest over the raw deal they felt the club was getting out of Rangers Retail.”

As well as the legal costs of defending Mr King Sevco’s accounts for 2016 revealed that the club required almost £1m of loans in March to complete the season.
