Chris Sutton has slapped down Robbie Savage’s claim about players from Scotland being unable to crack it in England.
Celtic’s match with Manchester City brought out all of the old arguments about the relative strengths of the two leagues.
While the wealth and strength in depth of the English Premier League is miles ahead of it’s Scottish equivalent there is no doubt that Celtic can currently compete with the biggest clubs south of the border.
Given an annual cheque for £100m from the broadcasters and new commercial deals the hoops would quickly be up there with the biggest and riches names in the game.
Sutton played in the Celtic side that saw off Blackburn and Liverpool on the Road to Seville in 2003 and is a strong backer of the Scottish game.
Challenged on twitter about the merit of Scottish based players it didn’t take Sutton long to remind Savage of the impact of players from north of the border.
.@btsportfootball @RobbieSavage8 so no players from Scotland did well down south… Petrov, Laudrup, Larsson, Van Bronckhorst, Viduka….
