Chris Sutton has added an ironic tweet to the Hapoel Beer Sheva debate.
Last night the side that Celtic knocked out of the Champions League qualifiers reached the last 32 of the Europa League at the expense of Southampton having already beaten Inter Milan home and away.
Back in August the Israeli’s were being dismissed as a joke side when they found themselves 3-0 down to a Leigh Griffiths inspired Celtic at half-time in a Champions League final qualifier.
Hapoel gave Celtic a fright as they scored twice before Moussa Dembele and Scott Brown restored Celtic’s two goal advantage.
The return leg saw Celtic go 2-0 down early in the second half but Hapoel were unable to find a third goal that would see them through as they dropped into the Europa League with Celtic going into the Champions League.
.@btsportfootball Perception???? Hapoel have gone from an awful team losing to Celtic to a great team beating Inter and now the Southampton????

Hapoel opened their Europa League campaign with a surprise 2-0 win away to Inter Milan followed by a 0-0 draw at home to Southampton.
Losing home and away to Sparta Prague suggested that they had run their race but after completing the double at home to Inter the outcome of the group hinged on their trip to Southampton.
With both teams level on seven points a home win or 0-0 draw would see Southampton progress. The match seemed to be going to script until Maor Buzaglo put Hapoel ahead in the 79th minute and although Virgil van Dijk equalised in stoppage time it was the Israeli side that progressed- unbeaten in four matches against Southampton and Inter Milan
