Davie Weir believes that at the age of 25 Rob Kiernan is developing into a Champions League defender!

After 15 appearances in the top tier of the Scottish game with believes that the former Watford, Kilmarnock, Yeovil, Bradford, Wigan, Wycombe, Accrington, Burton, Brentford, Southend and Birmingham man is ready to hit the heights.

Whether his Champions League debut will be at Ibrox or elsewhere is unclear, some cynics might think that Weir is hoping to raise some interest in the defender ahead of the transfer window opening.

Speaking to the Sunday Post Weir explained: “He’s young, and he has every attribute to be a Premier League, a Champions League defender. He’s two-footed and a real specimen. You couldn’t build him to look any more like a centre-half.

He’s learning. This is the highest level he’s played at, so he’s getting tested and he’ll make mistakes. But don’t we all?”

We certainly do, just ask any fan of Sheffield United who watched Weir’s side win one out of 13 matches before getting the sack on 11th October 2013.

During his playing career at Ibrox Weir played in the Champions League with Walter Smith bolstering his squad with players lured to Ibrox by the offer of so called EBT’s.

These payments were never revealed to the football authorities.

In March 2017 BDO, the liquidators of Rangers FC, will make a final appeal against the decision that the payments made to Weir’s team-mates were taxable.

Without the lure of EBT’s Weir would have been playing in a team full of Rob Kiernan’s.
