Over the course of this season it seems that John Beaton has made a number of changes to his refereeing style, not all for the better.

Back on the opening day of the season when he was in charge of Hearts v Celtic he dished out 11 yellow yet managed to get one of the key moments spectacularly wrong.

As Jamie Walker fell theatrically to the ground Beaton raced to award a penalty without even glancing over to his assistant never mind consulting with him.

After the match Walker was given a two match suspension by the SFA for simulation.

On Saturday at Ibrox Beaton was again in charge of Hearts and refereeing in a different style, almost like Dougie McDonald.

Firstly Walker was given a yellow card for simulation, Hearts have already put in their appeal against the decision.

With the scores level Don Cowie put the ball in the Sevco net, Beaton looked over to his assistant Stuart Stevenson while the Hearts players celebrated.

This time Beaton did consult with his assistant and between them they found a way of disallowing the Hearts goal.

Like the Dougie-Dougie case at Tannadice two years ago selected versions of events have leaked out. Unfortunately on all grounds the officials got it wrong.

Cowie wasn’t offside when he netted. The other excuse put forward was that he had left the pitch and returned which is against the laws. Wrong unfortunately, where a player unintentionally leaves the pitch he is entitled to return without any penalty.

Often it’s said that officials only have a split second to make their mind up on decisions, not so in this case.

If Cowie was offside Stevenson should have raised his flag, he wasn’t offside and he didn’t raise his flag.

If the officials felt that Cowie had deliberately left the pitch they are badly out of touch, a month or two in the lower divisions or junior ranks should help their decision making.
