Gary Mackay-Steven is a transfer target for Dundee United.

According to a report in The Sun Ray McKinnon has opened talks with Celtic about taking the winger back to Tannadice on loan.

Mackay-Steven joined Celtic from United two years ago alongside Stuart Armstrong. While the midfielder has flourished under Brendan Rodgers GMS has his work cut out to get into the first team picture.

Ankle surgery ruled the 25-year-old out of action for the first few months of the season during which Scott Sinclair arrived from Aston Villa while James Forrest’s explosive form earned him a new contract.

With Patrick Roberts also competing for a place in the wide positions Mackay-Steven is unlikely to feature strongly in Rodgers’ plans.

United were previously linked with a loan move for Nadir Ciftci but probably stand a better chance of securing GMS to boost their promotion bid.

McKinnon’s side are currently six points behind Hibs but with the future of Kris Commons up in the air United still harbour hopes of gaining automatic promotion.
