Cristian Gamboa knew he was making the right move when two of his West Brom team-mates urged him to join Celtic.

The full-back was out in the cold at the Hawthorns with no sign of first team football when Brendan Rodgers made an approach.

Apart from Emilio Izaguirre Gamboa knew little about Celtic but was quickly given the lowdown on a move to Glasgow.

James McClean is a big Celtic fan and he told me that if I had the chance, I had to come here,” Gamboa revealed to The Sun.

That was nice to hear but all the guys were nice, people like Darren Fletcher too. They knew my situation at West Brom.

So when I got the opportunity, everybody — especially the Scottish guys — just said ‘go’ because they knew I’d get the chance to play.”

Gamboa added: “My family really like it here in Glasgow. Everything is good. All the players have made me feel welcome and Emilio Izaguirre has been a big help.

We speak the same language, our countries are close back home, so I knew him from before.

Right away at Celtic, he introduced me to everyone. That has made it easy for me to settle in.”

Gamboa has now started eight SPFL matches and clearly has the confidence of his manager- allowing Mikael Lustig to be rested or to play in the centre of defence.

In two seasons at West Brom the 27-year-old only started one match in the Premier League although he did make 10 appearances as a substitute.

Before joining West Brom he made his name with Rosenborg- effectively replacing Lustig- when he joined the Norwegian side in August 2012.
