Brendan Rodgers will discuss a new contract with Emilio Izaguirre before the end of the season.

The Honduran is out of contract at the end of this season and is free to discuss a pre-contract agreement with any club outside of Scotland.

Izaguirre has come in from the cold to replace the injured Kieran Tierney but with the teenager close to fitness it looks like Izzy will be back on the sidelines.

At the end of the season the defender will turn 30 years of age but Rodgers is keen to extend his stay at Celtic.

When I came in there was maybe a general perception Emilio would go,” Rodgers told The Sun. “But I spoke to him and I felt he had a role to play.

He has done extremely well. Kieran is a special talent, but Emilio came in and did very well for us in a tough run of games.

I like Emilio and if I have him as cover and Kieran as starter then I’d be happy. We’ll talk more on his future before the end of the season.”

Izaguirre is the last player still at the club from Neil Lennon’s initial burst of signings.

In August 2010 he was signed in a £600,000 deal with Motagua shortly after playing for Honduras at the World Cup in South Africa.

With close to 250 appearances over six years he has become one of the longest serving imports in the Celtic’s history.
