The Daily Record has cranked up the pressure on Dave King by highlighting next month’s Supreme Court ruling on the old club’s use of EBT payments.

The dates of the appeal, March 15 and 16, have been known since November but the Record has decided to highlight it today and even mention Dave Murray’s £6.5m payments from the tax scheme.

EBT payments were made to keep Rangers competitive for over a decade by offering players and staff ‘tax free loans’ rather than regular Schedule E payments subject to Income Tax and National Insurance.

The Supreme Court will hear an appeal from BDO, liquidators of Rangers, that the payments were loans while HMRCA defend the latest ruling that the payments were part and parcel of the players employment and subject to income tax and national insurance.

Included in the report the Record mentions: “A long list of Rangers players and coaching staff benefited from EBT payments, and chairman Sir David Murray received £6.3million.

Managers Dick Advocaat and Alex McLeish got £1.5m and £1.7m respectively.

Players who got EBT cash included captain Barry Ferguson, who received £2.5m.”

With Sevco trailing Celtic by 30 points and Dave King hiding in South Africa the Record has recently taken on a more aggressive approach to reporting on issues from Ibrox.

In March 2015 after gaining a blazer as Mr King swept to power Paul Murray praised the courageous journalism of the Record.
