Chris Davies has spoken out in glowing terms about Patrick Roberts which may be the first hint that the winger could be staying on at Celtic.

Roberts has had a growing influence on the team since the turn of the year with his introduction against Albion Rovers producing two goals in the closing period.

The loan bhoy was on the scoresheet against Hearts and played an influential role in the 5-2 win away to St Johnstone.

With just over three months left on his 18 month loan the future of the England u-20 cap is unclear with next season likely to involve another loan deal away from Manchester City.

Agreeing a transfer deal with City would seem like a sensible arrangement with all sides if personal terms can be agreed with Davies in no doubt about the outstanding quality of Roberts.

We were aware of Patrick at Liverpool when he was in the Fulham youth ranks and what a talent he was coming through,” the Celtic assistant told the club website.

“The opportunity to come and work with him was something I was personally excited about and, having worked with him close hand, he is a player with an enormous talent.

“The idea at the big teams is if you dominate a lot of the ball, that you have wingers that are one-v-one specialists, who can take people on and eliminate them out the game. Patrick has got an incredible talent for that. He can face up to any defender and usually beats them, and he has added more things on to his game.

“He more or less got an assist for the first goal at the weekend, having had the initial shot. That part of his game of making penetrative runs in behind without the ball to get shots in will be another thing he will develop.

“He has been progressing well, he’s a real talent with enormous potential and he has definitely improved as the season has gone on. I’m sure he will have a great career ahead of him.”

Any move to sign Roberts would need to be completed in the early weeks of the summer transfer window with Brendan Rodgers plans geared around Champions League qualifiers starting in the second week of July.
