Barry Ferguson has taken a step closer to Ibrox by walking out on Clyde.

Following three seasons and ten matches without a win in the bottom tier of Scottish football the former Rangers (IL) skipper has walked out on Cumbernauld side.

Yesterday’s defeat at Annan was followed by speculation that Ferguson had offered to resign with the Daily Record, who employ Ferguson as a columnist, confirming the news over lunch today.

With hapless Graeme Murty looking totally out of his depth there will now be a clamour to get wee Barry involved at Ibrox.

Whether Ferguson is prepared to be associated with the March 12 visit to Celtic Park is probably the biggest obstacle to a return to Ibrox.

Over the last week the Sevco board have reportedly been carrying out interviews for a Director of Football who will appoint a first team coach.

With no one of any standing likely to be interested in either job it’s likely that the club will turn to a RRM (Real Rangers Man) in order to reassure supporters and shift season tickets.

Whoever gets the job is almost certain to employ Ferguson in some capacity before tackling the issue of dismantling Mark Warburton’s squad then attempting to put up a challenge to Celtic’s bid to make it seven-in-a-row.

Ferguson received £2.5m in EBT payments guaranteed by a side letter during his Ibrox playing days.
