Cheeky John Hartson believes that Barry Ferguson is essential to the new management team at Sevco!

The former Celtic striker compared Ferguson to Neil Lennon who took over from Tony Mowbray in 2009 and signed off with three title wins four years later.

Ferguson is currently managing Clyde in League Two, winning 26 points from 22 matches, trailing Annan Athletic by 11 points in the final play-off place.

With no money to pay off Mark Warburton it’s unlikely that Sevco will be able to fund the sort of management team that their fans expect which could open the door for Ferguson to be involved in some capacity.

They need Rangers men at Ibrox,” Hartson explained in The Sun. “And I can’t think of anyone better suited to turning things around there than Barry.

In many ways he’s the Rangers version of Neil Lennon, and he didn’t do too badly when he went into Celtic.

Maybe it’s time for the Ibrox powers-that-be to copy that blueprint. For me Barry is exactly what they need.

At Celtic we didn’t often speak about Rangers players before an Old Firm game because we were confident enough in ourselves but Barry was someone we mentioned. He was their driving force and leader.

He was Scotland captain at the time too, so we respected him as a player and a person.

This is a guy who has supported the club all his life, someone who would do anything to get them back to the top of Scottish football.

He was there as a kid, coming through the ranks when they had proper players.”

Hartson added: “I reckon Barry would still walk to Ibrox to help them out if they made the call.

I don’t think he’d ever turn them down because he’ll be more desperate than anyone to see them transformed.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying he should be brought in as manager.

He’s doing a very decent job at Clyde and for me he’s almost guaranteed to become Rangers manager one day in the future but right now I think he’d be better suited to go in there and work alongside someone.”

After yesterday’s 2-1 defeat at Dundee it seems that ‘for the foreseeable future’ for Graeme Murty may be until the weekend with a difficult match away to Inverness looming on Friday night.

The March 12 visit to Celtic is dominating the thoughts of the Ibrox board with few credible candidates prepared to take Mark Warburton’s squad into that fixture.
