It was the signature goal in one of the most significant derby matches of all time.

Seventeen years on the match is still celebrated with it’s impact felt to this day.

Both sides had gone into the match having won their opening four matches of the SPL season.

After the pain of the John Barnes season Celtic needed to convince themselves that they could beat Rangers (IL) and compete for the title.

For Dick Advocaat it was a chance to emphasise the genius of the Little General, during the summer he’d strengthened his double winning squad with Bert Konterman, Fermando Ricksen, Peter Lovenkrands, Allan Johnston and Kenny Miller.

Within 15 minutes of the match kicking off Celtic were 3-0 in front, by the final whistle it was 6-2 but one goal summarised how the next decade would be played out, eventually Rangers went into administration then liquidation.

Asked about the best goal of his career Larsson told 442 magazine: “I would say it was the little dink in the derby at home to Rangers. That was special for me because of the nutmeg on Bert Konterman first.

Then Stefan Klos was coming out of his goal, but the ball was going in as soon as it left my right boot. People still talk about that goal a lot!”

Within a week of that defeat Rangers signed Ronald de Boer with the Barcelona man accepting half the salary of Celtic’s Chris Sutton with his pay made up through the ‘tax free’ Discount Option Scheme.

Rangers eventually owed HMRC £2.8M for de Boer and Tore Andre Flo’s Discount Option Scheme payments. When they went into liquidation in June 2012 the £2.8m bill plus penalties and interest was still unpaid.
