Brazilian challenge to end Celtic u-19 season

|

Celtic’s youth side suffered in the heat today as they lost out to Anderlecht and Borussia Moenchengladbach at the Spax Cup.

A 20th minute goal from Anderlecht’s Garcia Calvete settled the opening game of the day with the midfielder curling a 20 yard shot beyond Robbie Thomson.

Celtic had the bulk of possession after the break but found the Belgian defence difficult to break down with the 25 minutes each way format of the competition giving the side that scores first a definite advantage.

Greig Spence, Callum McGregor and Michael Ordish were thrown on in a bid to salvage something from the match but an equaliser never looked likely.

A couple of hours later Celtic faced Borussia Moenchengladbach with the Germans knowing that a win would take them into the semi finals.

Wiesenfels put Moenchengladbach in front in the 20th minute and you could see the heads sink in the Celtic players when the same player added a second just before the half-time break.

Wiesenfels completed his hat-trick in the 35th minute and when Mandiangu made in 4-0 it looked ominous with 13 minutes left to play but Callum McGregor notched a consolation to keep the scoreline down to 4-1.

Tomorrow morning Celtic face the Brazilians of Porto Alegre at 10.40am BST before the tournament is completed with Moenchengladback facing Sparta Prague in the first semi-final followed by an all German clash between Wolfsburg and Hamburg SV.

After splitting their resources last week to compete in the Blue Stars Cup in Geneva and the Hong Kong Sevens the youth squad and coaching staff will be looking forward to their return trip to Glasgow and some well earned holidays.
