Portsmouth dismiss £300,000 bid for Tommy Smith as a joke

|

Hard-up Portsmouth have laughed off Rangers £300,000 bid for Tommy Smith as a joke.

Pompey are being manager by administrator Andrew Andronikou whose job is to raise as much money as possible for the club’s many creditors.

Portsmouth owe more than £100m to a variety of creditors but won’t be selling Smith or anyone else on the cheap.

“I have to say I was absolutely gobsmacked when I was told about the offer, Andronikou told The Express.

“It was an absolute joke, nowhere near the level we value Tommy. It can only be described as derisory.

“I received an offer from Rangers via the player’s agent earlier this week but has been turned down flat.

Andronikou added: “If clubs think that because Portsmouth are in administration we will accept any old offer, then they are mistaken.

“There will be no fire sale here and players will only be sold if we receive offers that meet our valuations.

“If Rangers want to buy the player then I would suggest they come to me and cut out the agent, then they will get a better idea of what we’re looking for.”

Smith scored just one goal for Portsmouth last season following his £1.8m move from Watford.

Even with that ‘strike-rate’ it’s unlikely that Smith would be allowed to leave the club for less than £1m.

Rangers haven’t paid a transfer fee for a player since August 2008 when Kyle Lafferty, Steve Davis, Maurice Edu and Pedro Mendes were brought in for fees of over £2m each.

A derisory offer from a derisory club. I suppose with them being in the financial state they have GOT THEMSELVES INTO they will try anything-parasites who will leech off anything that smells of death and they will feast on the rotting flesh of mortally wounded clubs-like themselves!! Bullard and Lawrence would walk over hot coals to play for Celtic-they don’t have to be peeled away from their clubs with a scalpel. Hail Hail.

Any news on Willie McStay going to Kilmarnock or St Mirrent Joe?

  • Joe McHugh says:

I think that today’s reports were a bit ahead of themselves, a family holiday, not to Budapest, seems to be the immediate priority.

I’d be disappointed if Willie left-he’s done such a great job for Celtic. I could only hope that he would leave to gain experience as a coach elsewhere-as Billy McNeill did-in anticipation of returning home a more skilled leader. Hail Hail.
