Portsmouth dismiss £300,000 bid for Tommy Smith as a joke

Hard-up Portsmouth have laughed off Rangers £300,000 bid for Tommy Smith as a joke.

Pompey are being manager by administrator Andrew Andronikou whose job is to raise as much money as possible for the club’s many creditors.

Portsmouth owe more than £100m to a variety of creditors but won’t be selling Smith or anyone else on the cheap.

“I have to say I was absolutely gobsmacked when I was told about the offer, Andronikou told The Express.

“It was an absolute joke, nowhere near the level we value Tommy. It can only be described as derisory.

“I received an offer from Rangers via the player’s agent earlier this week but has been turned down flat.

Andronikou added: “If clubs think that because Portsmouth are in administration we will accept any old offer, then they are mistaken.

“There will be no fire sale here and players will only be sold if we receive offers that meet our valuations.

“If Rangers want to buy the player then I would suggest they come to me and cut out the agent, then they will get a better idea of what we’re looking for.”

Smith scored just one goal for Portsmouth last season following his £1.8m move from Watford.

Even with that ‘strike-rate’ it’s unlikely that Smith would be allowed to leave the club for less than £1m.

Rangers haven’t paid a transfer fee for a player since August 2008 when Kyle Lafferty, Steve Davis, Maurice Edu and Pedro Mendes were brought in for fees of over £2m each.
