Redknapp unsure over Robbie Keane’s Spurs future
Spurs return for pre-season training next week with Redknapp on the look out for at least one striker to boost his side’s Champions League prospects.
Craig Bellamy and Diego Forlan have been strongly linked with moves to Spurs adding to uncertainty over Keane’s future at the club.
Redknapp already has England’s Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe at the club with Roman Pavlychenko coming back to form last season.
Keane found himself out of favour last season prompting his loan move to Celtic with the Spurs boss admitting that the new season could bring about a similar situation.
Redknapp said: “It was difficult this year because Robbie wasn’t in the side. I had (Peter) Crouch, (Jermain) Defoe and (Roman) Pavlyuchenko and I felt Robbie needed to play.
“The boy, if he’s not playing football, he’s not happy. Which is how it should be. And that’s why I let him go on loan to Celtic.
“But this year, I dunno, if he’s not in the team early on, then we’ll have the same problem so we’ll just have to wait and see.
“Robbie’s a great player, a fantastic professional and I’d love to have him though he might not play every week.
“But I don’t know if Robbie would settle for that at the moment. I think he still feels he can play every game. If he starts the season well and he’s playing well and we’re going well, then it’s not a problem. We’ll have to wait to see.”
Neil Lennon has admitted that he’d love to bring Keane back to Celtic.
That decision depends on a number of factors mainly whether the player would be interested in coming back to Glasgow and whether Celtic could come up with the financial package to complete the deal.
When he was appointed Celtic boss Lennon said: “Discussing Keane’s situation Lennon said: “I’d love to have Robbie Keane back here but it’ll be his decision. I had a chat with him at the end of the season and I would like to speak to him again.
“Whether the club can make that happen is another matter and whether he wants to come back, I don’t know. He would take a lot of convincing. He might have his own thoughts elsewhere, he never really gave a clear indication to me that he would be back.”
