Wage cuts bite deep at relegated Hull City

|

The desperate financial position of clubs relegated from the Premiership has been highlighted by Hull City.

As Celtic attempt to put together a package to preserve Jimmy Bullard’s £40,000+/week salary Kevin Kilbane has effectively accepted a 50% pay cut to stay with the club.

Hull’s £40m wage bill needs drastic action if the club is to stay in business despite the increased parachute payments to clubs dropping out of the Premiership.

Leeds United, Norwich, Charlton and Southampton have all ended up in League One as they battle financial meltdown with Leeds and Southampton being docked points after being relegated from The Championship.

Twelve months ago Hull were trying to entice players to the KC Stadium with £2m/year contracts on offer but Adam Pearson is now painting an entirely different picture of football life on Humberside.

“A lot of players have helped us over the summer months,” Pearson, head of football operations at Hull admitted. “I take my hat off to them for that.

“They’ve looked at the best interests of the club, their future careers, getting back into the Premier League and they’ve helped the club.

“People like Kevin Kilbane. He has agreed to split his one-year deal into two years and half his money.

“Things like that largely go unnoticed but it’s people like Kevin Kilbane that mean this club will still be in pretty good shape next season.

“There’s players at the heart of this club that care about it. You can see them a mile off. We’ve got a really strong dressing room with some great characters.”

Kilbane may be flavour of the month at the KC with Pearson, other players and the PFA are likely to be less impressed with his example.
