Aiden McGeady helped Spartak Moscow to a crucial 1-0 win away to Marseilles in his Champions League debut for the Russian side.

After a four year absence from the competition the win sets Spartak up nicely in Group F  with MSK Zilina due to visit Moscow in Matchday 2 while Marseilles travel to face Chelsea.

Defender César Azpilicueta put through his own net in the 81st minute of the match to give Spartak the points when he deflected a cross from Dimitri Kombarov past his own keeper.

That was Spartak’s only direct effort on goal but was enough to give them all three points with McGeady substituted by Renat Sabitov two minutes after the goal.

Goalkeeper Andriy Dykan was the star man for Spartak with a string of quality saves to deny the French side.

After the win Spartak coach Valery Karpin admitted: “Probably we were lucky, but in football you cannot do without luck, but more importantly all of the players have shown the utmost dedication and deserved this success.

“For half of our players it was their Champions League debut and I’m delighted with the result.”

In the other match in Group F Chelsea enjoyed a comfortable 4-1 win away to Zilina with Nicolas Anelka scoring twice for the Londoners.
