Hugh Dallas- 'I don't understand what the big deal is'

|

To no one’s surprise Hugh Dallas has backed Dougie McDonald over the non-penalty for Celtic at Dundee United on Sunday.

“I don’t understand what the big deal is,” Dallas claimed showing all the arrogance that he displayed week by week during his time refereeing.

“Dougie spoke discreetly to get the information from his assistant, who had a better angle,” the SFA’s head of refereeing claimed.

If that’s the case perhaps assistant referee’s should be given the whistle to control matches since they apparently have a better view than the referee.

As Gary Hooper was brought down by Dusan Pernis McDonald was looking head on at the contact from ten yards away.

From a distance of at least twenty five yards away assistant referee Steven Craven was looking side on at the incident.

If Craven had a better view of the incident surely referees will now be consulting their assistants over every penalty box incident?

To help clear up the confusion perhaps Dallas could explain to supporters Craven’s action at the penalty incident.

As soon as contact was made Craven headed towards the corner flag then stood a few yards in along the goal-line- surely anticipating his role in the penalty kick.

Surely if Craven had any doubt about the decision he should have raised his flag?

In some incidents an assistant linesman will have a better view of an incident than the referee, that’s why they are now assistant referee’s rather than linesmen.

Craven would have been perfectly placed to notice Ki Sung Yeung getting body checked by Paul Dixon who kept his eye on the Celtic player to ensure that he wouldn’t get near the ball.

Craven would also have got a great view of how Scott Severin used his thigh, chest and finally his arm to block Mark Wilson’s cross from getting past him.

On neither occasion did McDonald attempt to discuss those incidents with his assistant.

Finally, confirming the view that the referee is right even when he is wrong Dallas adds: “Looking at the replays you can see that decision was ultimately justified. As soon as Dougie was aware of that he changed his decision – and he did so correctly.”

The comments from Dallas will be taken on board by players throughout Scotland- if you are unhappy with a decision there is no harm in surrounding the referee and getting him to speak to his assistant even if the assistant is in a worse position to view an incident and appears to be in agreement with the referee.

Having gone to the bother of explaining that decision can we now look forward to further explanations from Dallas or will he remain in his Ivory Tower having a quiet chuckle at the ignorance of the plebs while backing his officials to the hilt?

I was involved in refereeing a few years ago. The Refereeing fraternity have got an unwritten code to back each other to the hilt regardless of how bad they have performed. Their opinion is that they get enough abuse from all angles, so stick together to help each other. Privately they do admit theres problems. This would explain Dallas comments.

Joe first & foremost keep yup the great work – VideoCelts fastly becoming a must for online hoops everywhere.

Secondly – If only the questions raised would be put to Shug from an independent focus as more and more of this tosh will only take too long before it’s shown up for what it really is.

Its like the same regular response you’d expect from the SFA who for a lotta money do very little for the goodness in Scottish Football.

Dominic…we KNOW there’s problems….the standard of referees and assistants is the BIGGEST problem…..but it does NOTHING for the game when the top man….tries to defend the indefensible….

Had this happened with another certain Glasgow team involved….does anyone honestly believe that Mr. Craven would have re-acted the same way??
    You’re right…..NO CHANCE !!

So let’s be honest here…..Dallas is wrong to have backed these officials…and has opened up a huge can of worms…..
Celtic shouldn’t let this go ….and I hope they’re in the referee’s face , if necesssary, on Sunday….ENOUGH IS ENOUGH !!

Mike I agree the standards shocking and with the refereeing fraternity in Scotland being mostly Rangers fans we see the bad decisions and the attitude that goes with it.

Im not in anyway defending the Refs, I’m only letting you know what its like being amongst them.

I was part of the Glasgow Association for a couple of years and went to the meetings so I saw it first hand. The song we sing ‘mason in the black’is spot on.

I do think however that the Refs we have that are Lawyers in there daytime job are the better ones as they have an integrity issue.

Wullie Young being a good example. I dont believe he was ever biased against us. He made mistakes against us as well as the ‘shame’.

Without going on too much about the reversal of the decision by McDonald is it only me who thinks that it should have been a penalty against Kenneth in the first place for his brge on Hooper and this was only compounded by Pernis bringing him down.

I haven’t seen much commentary about Kenneth’s barge on Hooper from any quarter.

  • I do not understand why there is so much moaning and growning about the SPL refs. The SPL’s need to survive includes Celtic FC.

Withdraw from the league for a full season and then proper fair play will prevail.
    Absolutely.
