Hugh Dallas- 'I don't understand what the big deal is'

To no one’s surprise Hugh Dallas has backed Dougie McDonald over the non-penalty for Celtic at Dundee United on Sunday.

“I don’t understand what the big deal is,” Dallas claimed showing all the arrogance that he displayed week by week during his time refereeing.

“Dougie spoke discreetly to get the information from his assistant, who had a better angle,” the SFA’s head of refereeing claimed.

If that’s the case perhaps assistant referee’s should be given the whistle to control matches since they apparently have a better view than the referee.

As Gary Hooper was brought down by Dusan Pernis McDonald was looking head on at the contact from ten yards away.

From a distance of at least twenty five yards away assistant referee Steven Craven was looking side on at the incident.

If Craven had a better view of the incident surely referees will now be consulting their assistants over every penalty box incident?

To help clear up the confusion perhaps Dallas could explain to supporters Craven’s action at the penalty incident.

As soon as contact was made Craven headed towards the corner flag then stood a few yards in along the goal-line- surely anticipating his role in the penalty kick.

Surely if Craven had any doubt about the decision he should have raised his flag?

In some incidents an assistant linesman will have a better view of an incident than the referee, that’s why they are now assistant referee’s rather than linesmen.

Craven would have been perfectly placed to notice Ki Sung Yeung getting body checked by Paul Dixon who kept his eye on the Celtic player to ensure that he wouldn’t get near the ball.

Craven would also have got a great view of how Scott Severin used his thigh, chest and finally his arm to block Mark Wilson’s cross from getting past him.

On neither occasion did McDonald attempt to discuss those incidents with his assistant.

Finally, confirming the view that the referee is right even when he is wrong Dallas adds: “Looking at the replays you can see that decision was ultimately justified. As soon as Dougie was aware of that he changed his decision – and he did so correctly.”

The comments from Dallas will be taken on board by players throughout Scotland- if you are unhappy with a decision there is no harm in surrounding the referee and getting him to speak to his assistant even if the assistant is in a worse position to view an incident and appears to be in agreement with the referee.

Having gone to the bother of explaining that decision can we now look forward to further explanations from Dallas or will he remain in his Ivory Tower having a quiet chuckle at the ignorance of the plebs while backing his officials to the hilt?
