McGeady misses out as Spartak Moscow win again

Aiden McGeady

Aiden McGeady was rested tonight as Spartak Moscow warmed up for Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Chelsea by beating Alaniya Vladikavkaz 3-0.

The former Celtic favourite was rested after a punishing recent schedule that saw him play for Ireland against Russia and Slovakia over the last seven days.

Just 13,000 were present in the Luzhniki Stadium but a full house of 78,000 is expected for the visit of Chelsea with both clubs having full points from their opening fixtures.

Once again Spartak turned to their Brazilian strike-force of Ari and Alex who scored the opening goals before an own goal from Bulgarian Ivan Ivanov completed the scoring early in the second half.

The win lifts Spartak into fourth place in the championship but they still have their work cut out to reach next season’s Champions League with third placed CSKA Moscow two points ahead with two games in hand.
