On form Celts face St Mirren

|

Celtic’s youth side face an early start tomorrow when they take their 100% record to Keanie Park, Johnstone to face St Mirren, kick off 11.30am.

Stevie Frail’s side maintained their winning run last week with a 2-0 win over Dundee United following a month long break.

That absence has allowed Aberdeen and Motherwell to set the pace at the top of the table although a win against St Mirren could see Celtic regain top spot.

Frail said: “We want to keep our winning run going and are looking forward to a tough match against St Mirren.

“Last season we finished on a good winning run which has given everyone confidence and I’ve been pleased with the start that we’ve made this season.

“Four wins and four clean sheets is impressive and that’s the standards that we want to maintain.

“We played a lot of good football in the first half against Dundee United last week and although you can’t always be in top form it’s something to strive towards.”

Celtic have been able to play the same defence in every match of Stephen O’Donnell, Lewis Toshney, Matty Hughes and Kieran Brennan in front of Robbie Thomson.

Four clean sheets are testimony to the resolve and understanding between the players with Thomson excelling when called into action.

Frail added: “Robbie takes a great pride in his performances and is rightly pleased with his clean sheet record.

“We’ve known that he is a good keeper and he puts everything into every match and training session, he sets himself high standards.

“He’s taken the step up from playing for the u-17s into the u-19 team and made a big contribution to our winning start to the season.”

There was good news for Scotland’s u-19 side tonight, featuring Callum McGregor, Kieran Brennan and James Keatings with Scotland qualifying for the elite stage of the European Championships.

Despite finishing third in  Group 2 behind Estonia and Norway Billy Stark’s side have qualified for the next phase as one of the two third placed side’s with the best record.

A statistically minded reader of this site informed me: “With Scotland ahead of Denmark, who also had 6 points, and only one other group capable of finishing with three teams on 6 points, Scotland are guaranteed to be one of the top 2 third-placed teams.”
