Dougie Dougie- I don't know why I agreed to it

|

On a media tour that his mentor Hugh Dallas would be proud of Dougie McDonald has been explaining away the events of Cravengate and the subsequent follow-up/cover-up.

After being the fourth official at yesterday’s Hearts-Kilmarnock match Dougie Dougie left to open his heart to The Sun, the BBC and also the Daily Record.

Referee’s don’t normally speak out about decisions that they have been involved in, it has to be assumed that Dougie Dougie was speaking with permission from the SFA.

Hopefully Willie Collum will also be given permission to explain why Rangers were awarded a penalty last week for an incident that he didn’t see and why Lee McCulloch wasn’t shown a second yellow card for his foul on Georgios Samaras.

Two weeks after his baffling performance in the Dundee United-Celtic match Dougie Dougie is still unable to comprehend his actions.

He told the Record: “It was of no benefit to me to come up with our story and I don’t know why I agreed to it.

“I was being supportive of Stevie. It was wrong and I knew as I was leaving Tannadice that I shouldn’t have done it.

“I also realised that I would have to tell the truth about what happened because I would be quizzed by the media.

“I had nothing to gain by going with the story but I thought it might help Stevie.”

Yip, Dougie Dougie decided to tell the referee supervisor that it was Craven’s idea to disallow the penalty for Celtic to protect his assistant.

Sure Dougie.

Going on to give his version of what happened between awarding the penalty and lying to Neil Lennon Dougie Dougie explained: “The keeper’s legs made contact but then I saw the ball move in a direction which made it clear he had also got a touch on the ball first.

“It was a split-second decision and I put my hand up as the United players came rushing in as though to say, ‘hold the bus, I know this is wrong’.

“I went over to Stevie and he said the keeper had touched the ball first. So I changed the decision and that was the right thing to do.

“After the match we were in our dressing-room and Stevie pulled out the wire on his communication device before removing my earpiece.

“Then he asked ‘what are we going to say to the supervisor?’ “I just said ‘I don’t f****** care what we say to him. Just say that you called out Dougie! Dougie! and that I came over to you.

“The supervisor (Jim McBurnie) came in, sat on the edge of the bath and asked what had happened.

“We told him and later when Neil Lennon came in we told him the same thing.

“It was wrong and I texted referees’ chief Hugh Dallas as I left Tannadice asking him to call me.”

It appears that a man trusted to make crucial decisions in important football matches can have his opinion and indeed his integrity swayed by wanting to protect an assistant referee.

Having had time on the pitch to gather his thoughts Dougie Dougie suggested after the match that the referee supervisor and the Celtic manager are told a lie about the u-turn decision.

Then all of a sudden Dougie Dougie feels a pang of guilt and decides to tell Dallas the truth of what went on.

After his round of interviews surely the SFA will never again put such an indecisive referee as Dougie Dougie in charge of another match?
