Harry Redknapp accuses English officials of cover up

|

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has accused officials of making up stories to cover their mistakes.

Redknapp watched his side lose a bizarre goal against Manchester United on Saturday when the goalscorer Nani clearly handled the ball before putting the putting it in the Spurs net.

Referee Mark Clattenburg look lost through the incident and allowed the goal to stand despite going over to consult his assistant who had raised his flag.

Unlike the controversial Dundee United-Celtic penalty u-turn no-one at the FA has came out to defend or explain the incident at Old Trafford.

Redknapp could be hit with an FA ban for bringing the game into disrepute but won’t accept any punishment lying down or take the sanction on the chin.

The Spurs boss said: “I never questioned the integrity (of the referees). What I said is that when they get in their room they make sure that they sing from the same hymn sheet and anyone that thinks that doesn’t happen, they shouldn’t be in football, or involved in the game.

“Because I’ve been in it long enough. They always come up with the same.

“The linesman isn’t going to say, ‘I told him it was handball and he should have disallowed it.’ They’ll all come up with the same… there’ll be an answer. Even though I know for a fact that Mark Clattenburg in private has said to somebody that he made a mess, really. He should have blown up and given the free-kick. The whole thing was a mess.”

The FA are angry with Redknapp’s after match comments rather than the cause of those comments.

After the match the Spurs boss said: “What a farcical way to finish a game. It was deliberate handball. The referee obviously didn’t see Nani handball it, so that’s why he let play go on. The assistant has seen it, that’s why he flagged so the referee should disallow the goal.

“How can he give a goal? If Nani has put his hands on the ball, he should be booked, to start with, then it’s a free-kick. If you look at (Darren) Fletcher, he is telling Nani to get back into position, because he thinks we’re going to counter-attack. It’s a free-kick. So Gomes has put the ball down and taken it.”

Those comments could lead to a fine or ban from the FA but the Spurs boss has warned what the consequences of that would be.

Redknapp added: “I’ve got no issues with the FA, but I wouldn’t take it lying down. There’s no way I’d do any more TV interviews. No chance. Don’t bother asking me to speak to TV after a game again. I don’t care if it’s in the rules.

“No chance. I don’t want to do it. The last thing I want to do is go on TV and talk about the game. I just want to get on the coach and go home. I don’t expect a charge, but if they do I’ll fight it all the way.

“If they want to make an issue of what I said then I’ll make some issues as well – don’t worry.

“’If you want me just to come and talk rubbish and say, ‘No, it was a good decision, I’m quite happy with it’, then don’t bother to get me to come out after a game.”

“We shouldn’t be dragged out onto TV two, three, four minutes after a game. I don’t want to go on TV; I’d much rather stay in the dressing room with the players.

“But when I’m asked a question, I give a truthful answer. He made a right mess of it all, and that was my answer. And I stand by that 100 per cent.”
