Lennon- There are a lot of questions to be answered

|

Neil Lennon has insisted that the refereeing issues of the last few weeks are far from over.

Any hopes that yesterday’s statement from Celtic would bring an end to the controversy over the lies of Dougie Dougie and subsequent cover up by Hugh Dallas can be forgotten.

New SFA Chief Executive Stewart Regan promised to break-up the system of discipline which ludicrously allows former referee’s to sit in judgement of refereeing mistakes.

That set up resulted in Dougie Dougie being let off for a series of lies at the recent Dundee United-Celtic match but Lennon insists that the matter is far from finished.

“There are a lot of questions to be answered,” the Celtic boss admitted. “Our stance is in the statement and you could read into that what you will.

“I’ve just spoken to Peter (Lawwell) about it. Enough has been said about it and I want to move on. It’s not as if we’re sweeping it under the carpet –we’re not.”

Regan has made a less than impressive start at the SFA and appeared to be little more than the messenger when he delivered last Friday’s underwhelming verdict on Dougie Dougie.

On Thursday he claimed that he was about to embark on wholesale change of the SFA’s committee based structure with Celtic looking closely to see if he carries through his promises.

Regan stated: “I think there is an issue whether a Referee Committee consisting largely of former referees was the correct avenue for a disciplinary case against a current referee.

“This is something I hope will be a catalyst for positive change in the processes and efficiency across the spectrum of the Association’s responsibilities.”

If referee’s know that future lies and mistakes will be dealt with by outsider’s rather than their peers it will be a step in the right direction.

Amongst the questions that Celtic are waiting for an answer on is an explanation of how Willie Collum awarded Rangers a penalty for an incident that he didn’t see.

After losing to Rangers Lennon said: “I’ve not spoken to the referee yet but I will because Rangers should have been down to 10 men and it was never a penalty.

“I don’t even think Collum has seen the incident. I don’t know why he has given it. He has other questions to answer. I do not know why McCulloch is still on the pitch after a blatant obstruction.”

With no charge of bringing the game into disrepute slapped on Lennon it could be assumed that Collum is being questioned about those decisions.”
