Celtic fan Wayne Rooney was delighted to silence the Rangers support by killing off their Champions League dream at Ibrox.

With the score tied at 0-0 a last minute goal for the home side would have given Rangers an outside chance of progress going into matchday six.

Steven Naismith’s assault on Fabio provided United with a penalty which Rooney calmly slotted past Allan McGregor before celebrating wildly in front of the travelling United fans.

Four years earlier the England striker had sat in the Broomloan Road stand cheering on Roy Keane as a Maciej Zurawski goal earned Celtic a win with the hoops fan delighted to have found the net at Ibrox.

Rooney said: “When you score it is always a special moment but to do it at Rangers – it is well known that I follow Celtic – after a hard couple of months was just a great feeling. I was delighted with the penalty and it will give me some confidence.

“It was nice to score, but the main thing was to get back playing. I’m happy with that. It was a great relief and I am sure you could see that with my celebrations. Hopefully I can kick on from this.”

As an Everton player Rooney was a regular at Celtic matches alongside former hoops defender Alan Stubbs.

After his much publicised personal problems and contract dispute he’s hoping that sinking Rangers is the first of many goals.

Rooney added: “The most important thing for me at the minute is to play and score goals.

“I can get back to the standard of last season. I am a confident person and think I can do it.

“I feel like I have apologised to the fans but everyone keeps saying that I haven’t, if that is the case, then I apologise for my side of things.

“I have made my point clear since I signed my contract that I’m committed to this club for the long term and I want to be successful with this club.”

Willie McStay appointed Ross County manager.
