Kenny Miller, Davie Weir, Allan McGregor, Lee McCulloch and Kirk Broadfoot have all been left out leaving Steven Naismith and Steven Whittaker as the only Rangers players selected.

Celtic’s Shaun Maloney has also been left out.

Dundee United striker David Goodwillie has been brought in to replace Miller despite a court appearance last week following a 4am incident in Glasgow city centre.

Another surprise inclusion is Liverpool reserve Danny Wilson whose only top team appearance was in the Carling Cup defeat from League Two outfit Northampton Town.

For the opening matches of the European Championship campaign against Lithuania and Liechtenstein Levein selected eight Rangers players.

Explaining his latest squad the Scotland boss said: “It’s quite unusual to have so many players from one club. There were seven or eight in one squad recently.

“I’m conscious those guys have played some big matches, and a lot of matches, recently.

“I have decided to give them a bit of a break but it kind of fits in with my policy for this match anyway.

“I have brought some younger ones in who have been doing well and I want to see how they fit in.”

International football, and friendlies in particular, are easy to criticise, with this squad announcement club managers can clearly pick and choose which matches they can release their players for.

Despite his own heavy schedule of matches Manchester United’s Darren Fletcher is included in the squad as captain.

Speaking ahead of the squad announcement Smith said: “Having been an international manager, I realise why Craig will take the friendlies.

“I think the majority of international managers will be looking at players that they have been watching and have never had an opportunity to play.

“I would imagine it would be that type of game but we’ll just have to wait.”
