SPL speak out on referee crisis

|

SPL Chief Executive Neil Doncaster has expressed his concerns about the crisis in refereeing.

The lies of Dougie McDonald and cover-up from Hugh Dallas have brought shame on the game and exposed the archaic ways that the SFA does business.

The SPL are dependent on the SFA to supply referees with Doncaster concerned by the issues raised over the last couple of weeks.

Speaking to the Daily Record he said: “When the Scottish game is in the headlines for stories about referees, like the one concerning Dougie McDonald, it isn’t helpful to anyone.

“Refs are the game’s policemen and it’s imperative they’re trusted. It’s evident what’s gone on over the past couple of weeks hasn’t been helpful in that regard.

“The fact there have been different accounts of what actually took place that day at Tannadice hasn’t been helpful.

“Stewart (new SFA Chief Executive Stewart Regan) came into Scottish football with his eyes wide open but he might have preferred a quieter arrival than he’s had.

“The whole game takes a knock when people are quest ioning match officials in this way.”

The SPL are meeting with the SFA today with the refereeing crisis certain to be high on the agenda.

As the SFA’s biggest client and provider of finances Doncaster will surely be pushing for greater accountability from the SFA when it comes to refereeing matters.

A statement on the SFA or SPL website two hours after the game would do the game a great service and save Hugh Dallas or whoever is in charge of refereeing from botching together the least damaging version of events.
