Celtic set for Dundee cup test

|

Celtic begin their defence of the SFA Youth Cup tomorrow at home to Dundee, kick-off 1.30pm Lennoxtown.

Stevie Frail’s side won the trophy in thrilling fashion at Hampden last season with a 2-0 win over Rangers with the hoops coach setting the current side the same target.

“We’re four games away from the final at Hampden and that’s the target,” Frail explained.

“Last season we started away to Threave Rovers and painted a picture to the players of getting to the final at Hampden.

“Cup-ties are special games and we’re looking forward to facing Dundee. They may be a First Division side but they have a strong set up and will be well prepared for this match.”

Half of last season’s cup winning squad are still eligible for the current campaign including skipper Matty Hughes, top scorer James Keatings and Filip Twardzik who scored as a substitute in last season’s final against Rangers.

Celtic have started their defence of the SPL title in devastating style with five straight wins without conceding a single goal.

Last Saturday they beat Kimarnock 8-0 before facing Liverpool at Celtic Park on Tuesday in a match designed as a trial towards establishing a youth equivalent of the Champions League.

Celtic came from behind to beat the Premiership outfit 3-1 with Frail delighted by the team’s performance and reaction to that result.

He added: “It was a very pleasing result against Liverpool but no-one is getting carried away.

“It was a good performance and pleasing to turn on a bit of style playing at Celtic Park. Everyone was very impressed by what they saw and that’s pleasing.

“We’ve got a good group of players and they are all striving to improve. No one was patting themselves on the back or giving it high fives after the match.

“They are developing well and a lot of the credit for that goes to our sports scientist Ian Coll. The boys are all dedicated and are getting their rewards for the work that they are putting in.

“We’ve had a pleasing start to the season and the aim tomorrow is to keep that going against Dundee by qualifying for the next round of the cup.”
