First Boxing Day casualty

Bad news

Sunday’s Kilmarnock-Hearts match has become the first Boxing Day SPL fixture to be cancelled.

Frozen pipes have been blamed for the cancellation which really should prompt an SPL probe before much more of the winter card is wiped out.

Having a pitch protection system is virtually pointless if it’s not being properly maintained.

An SPL statement said: “The Kilmarnock v Hearts match on Boxing Day has been postponed due to a combination of frozen pipes in three of the four stands and concerns about the pitch due to a fault in the protection system caused by the severe weather.

“There will be a pitch inspection at 10am on Boxing Day ahead of the match between Dundee United and Hmilton Accies at Tannadice.”

Despite the increasing backlog of fixtures both Walter Smith and Davie Weir have spoken out against an extension of the SPL season which could force Rangers into playing four games in eight or nine days if they continue to progress in cup competitions.
