State edited highlights now available

BBC SCOTLAND Celtic newsWith their minimal coverage of Scottish football BBC Scotland really should be able to edit together a watchable highlights package.

Being able to call upon the sort of resources that a commercial broadcaster could only dream about the BBC should leave no stone unturned to provide the newsiest and best coverage possible to the long suffering licence payer- except for viewers in Scotland…

Celtic’s 1-0 win over Motherwell had various not to be missed incidents including Paddy McCourt’s goal, Scott Brown’s sending off and the pathetic display of referee Stephen Finnie.

McCourt’s goal is given generous coverage by the state broadcaster as is Brown’s red card, a second yellow offence with his original booking also shown.

Five other bookings were left out of the BBC highlights package as Finnie lost the place in the second half having lost his footing ending on his backside in the first half having blocked an earlier pass by McCourt as he struggled to keep up with play without interfering.

It’s asking too much for a 5 minutes and 15 seconds package to show every booking but with four cards being issued within 6 minutes in the second half surely one of them would have been worth showing?

Perhaps Keith Lasley’s 68 minute booking for a push on Emilio Izaguirre which resulted in a Motherwell corner rather than a Celtic free kick was surely worth including?

Later on in the match Lasley was penalised for deliberate handball as he attempted to get into the penalty box but rather than issue him with another booking Finnie decided to lecture Fraser Forster.

In an increasingly competitive market the case for the BBC is increasingly under question.

With commercial stations, noticeably Sky and Sky Sports in particular, providing a paid for service that customers want the justification for the licence fee is wearing thinner and thinner.

If BBC Scotland can’t provide relevant highlights to justify the salaries paid at Pacific Quay they really should leave football to the commercial concerns and stick to some public service events like shinty and curling.

Should we really expect anything less from the Bigoted Broadcasting Corporation than edited highlights the don’t portray Celtic in a good light.
