A first half penalty scored by Julio Arca gave Middlesbrough three crucial points against Cardiff today to lift Tony Mowbray’s side out of the relegation places.

Scott McDonald was the only former Celt in Mowbray’s starting XI with Barry Robson joining Kris Boyd on the bench.

David Marshall, Lee Naylor and Craig Bellamy were all in the Cardiff side who missed out on the chance to narrow the gap on league leaders QPR who lost at home to Watford last night.

With just one point from their last five games the win was vital for Middlesbrough who moved above Scunthorpe out of the drop zone.

There’s very little to separate the teams in the Championship with just 12 points between a play-off spot and the relegation zone.

Elsewhere there was disappointment for Roy Keane and Paul Lambert with both Ipswich and Norwich losing.

Ipswich crashed to their fifth successive defeat away to bottom of the table Preston while Norwich crashed to a 2-0 defeat at home to Portsmouth.

In Scotland Willie McStay had to settle for a point in his managerial debut for Ross County.

Richie Brittain gave the visitors the lead but Chris Eskine levelled to leave both clubs sitting on 14 points.
