English Chief Exec's bonus dwarfs SPL telly payments

SPL logoPeter Scudamore- Chief Executive of the Premier League- has picked up a £3m bonus for negotiating the latest Premiership television deal.

The fact that relegated Premiership sides pick up ten times the amount of money paid to the SPL champions is well known.

Finding out that an administrator has been paid a bonus worth more than the sum paid out to Celtic and Rangers for domestic television must be galling news in both boardrooms.

News of Scudamor’s bonus comes within 24 hours of the SPL reviving plans to launch their own television channel based on a model being used in the Dutch league.

The current SPL television deal was salvaged from the ashes of Setanta and is worth a total of £65m over five years from Sky Sports and ESPN who have access to 60 live fixtures.

Whether a Scottish option could be put together remains to be seen, looking medium term the SPL should be investigating when they could offer an on-line package for live matches.

Details of Scudamore’s bonus were revealed by Charles Sale in the Daily Mail.

According to Sale some of the Premier League clubs were surprised by the size of their Chief Exec’s bonus.

Scudamore is credited with masterminding the current Premier League television deal which comes to over £2bn from Sky, ESPN the BBC and lucrative overseas rights.
