Lennon steps up defender chase

|

Neil Lennon Celtic managerNeil Lennon will step up his bid to sign a central defender with an increased bid likely to be made for Kelvin Wilson.

The Nottingham Forest man has already signed a pre contract agreement to join Celtic at the end of the season but a hamstring injury for Daniel Majstorovic against Aberdeen has limited Lennon’s options.

The Swede was replaced by Charlie Mulgrew five minutes from half time whilst Wilson didn’t even make it onto the bench for Forest in their 1-0 win away to Derby.

“We have been looking to strengthen in that area with Hooiveld leaving and Loovens out,” Lennon admitted after the win over Aberdeen.

“We will have to assess how Daniel is but I would imagine he would struggle for Wednesday so we will be looking to bring a player in.

“We will have to speed things up now. It is a blow if Majstorovic is out because he has been immense in the last couple of months for us.

“We will have to try and get someone of that ilk in. I would imagine that Wilson will be one of the options we look for, yes.”

Rangers defeat to Hearts gave Celtic the chance to open up a five point lead at the top of the table.

Anthony Stokes notched the only goal of the game in the 27th minute when he got in behind the Aberdeen defence to meet a pass from Gary Hooper before rounding Jamie Langfield to net.

Recent home matches have tended to be nervy affairs with Aberdeen coming more into the match in the closing stages.

Mulgrew proved to be a more than able deputy for Majstorovic and helped keep chances for his old club to a minimum as Celtic secured full points.

“Unless you get that two-goal cushion there seems to be an anxiety around the place a little bit,” Lennon added.

“From the supporters point of view I would like to see them cut the players a little bit of slack at times towards the end of games.

“I can understand the frustration but it doesn’t help at times and it makes it a bit frantic.

“We controlled the game for long periods and we should have been more comfortable winners.

“But the longer the game goes on and you are just 1-0 up, there tends to be an anxiety creeping in.

“Chances weren’t aplenty but our goalkeeper didn’t have a save to make and a month ago we might have drawn.”
