Willie McStay Celtic news

Former Celt Willie McStay was delighted to take a draw in his first Scottish Cup tie in management.

Ross County matched holders Dundee United all the way to earn a draw at Tannadice and take the cup holders back to Dingwall next week for a replay.

Loan Celt Jason Marr made his County debut in front of former Celtic and United keeper Michael McGovern and helped his new side to a clean sheet.

“I said before the game that tactically we had to be aware and we had to be courageous in our defending,” McStay explained. “We also thought we could cause them one or two problems and I think we did that.

“We had a very, very good start to the second half. At that stage if we score maybe we could go on and win it but we always knew down the hill there would be a bit of pressure.

“The young players coped with it. We got a little bit of luck but I thought that balanced out in the game.”

United were one of three SPL clubs held at home with St Mirren drawing with Peterhead and Hibs held by Ayr United at Easter Road.

Former Celt Jim Goodwin made his St Mirren debut alongside loan striker Paul McGowan whilst Peterhead included for mer Celtic youth team defender Ryan Strachan in their side.

Well travelled one time Celt Ryan McCann, a Scottish Cup finalist with Queen of the South in 2008, played in midfield for Ayr with former Celts, Mark Brown, Liam Miller, Kevin McBride and Derek Riordan were all in the Hibs side.
