Former Airdrie striker Tony Watt made a scoring debut as Celtic’s youth side beat Krylia Sovetov 3-1 today.

Watt flew out to Turkey in midweek with Tommy McIntyre and made an immediate impact by opening the scoring shortly before half time.

Stephen O’Donnell and Paul George were also on target with coach Stevie Frail delighted by his side’s performance and Watt’s debut.

“Tony is a good player and a definite asset to our squad,” he said. “It was good to bring him out to Turkey and let him fit in with the rest of the squad.

“He scored a good goal and showed up well. There’s a bit of pace and power to his game and he showed that against Krylia.

“They looked a strong side physically. They looked around the 20/21 mark and made 9 or 10 changes at half time and have a big squad over here.

“Our team was picked with an eye on Saturday’s match at home to Aberdeen and I was pleased with the display.

“Last week against Atalyaspor there were a few spells where we looked a bit sluggish but everyone was sharp today and that’s pleasing.

“The players have put in a lot of hard work over the last ten days and that paid off in the performance.

“We’ve got another full day’s training tomorrow then we’ll pack up on Monday night. On Tuesday morning we’ll get another training session in then head to the airport and be back home Tuesday night.”

Frail added: “We’re looking forward to getting back into action and hopefully Greig Spence and Curtis Jones will be close to fitness.

“Greig has had a bad time with injury and I’m looking forward to having him back in the squad.

“He was our top scorer last season and it’ll be good to get him involved again.”
