Celtic youths make ground on Rangers

|

Liam Gormley Celtic newsYouth coach Stevie Frail won’t pay any attention to the SPL table despite watching his side move three points closer to leaders Rangers.

A double from substitute Liam Gormley added to James Keatings’ opener earned Celtic a comfortable 3-0 win over Inverness Caley Thistle while Rangers match away to Hearts was postponed due to the weather.

Rangers remain four points clear but Celtic have two games in hand and travel to St Johnstone on Tuesday.

Only some incredible goalkeeping from Murray Kinnaird prevented Celtic from running up a more convincing scoreline with the Caley Thistle woodwork taking a pounding.

“There were a lot of positives from the game,” Frail explained. “After the game I asked who had had a good chance to score and six or seven hands went up. We had so many chances that the result should have been more resounding.

“That was frustrating, maybe on another day it would have been more comfortable for us. It’s good to get another game played and pick up the points.

“We don’t take much notice of the league table, football is full of cliches but we can’t look more than one game ahead.

“The next match is always the most important one, we’re a few games behind and can’t really look at how the league table is standing.”

Celtic started out at a great pace with full-backs Kieran Brennan and Stephen O’Donnell pushing forward at every opportunity.

Tony Watt had a couple of early chances but looked over anxious to get on the scoresheet before Keatings was sent through one on one to put Celtic in front in the 19th minute.

Watt then hit the bar with a close range effort with Keatings also striking the woodwork on the half hour mark with a great effort from 25 yards.

After the break the pressure continued towards the Inverness goal with Gormley replacing Watt in the 54th minute.

There was a nagging worry that Caley Thistle might hit Celtic on the counter but that fear was ended in the 69th minute when Gormley glanced a header into the net from a Brennan cross following a quickly taken corner kick.

Callum Bagshaw and Matty Hughes were next to succeed in the crossbar challenge, Baggy with a 25 yard drive and Hughes with a close range header.

Celtic’s constant attacking was rewarded again in the final minute when a powerful run from O’Donnell deep into the penalty box was met by Gormley who headed the ball back across goal into the net.

“Liam scored with two good headers,” Frail added. “He got up well but his second goal was down to the energy shown by Stephen O’Donnell in 89 minutes.

“I thought that he should have slid it to Callum McGregor then he dug out a cross to the back post and Liam did well to put it in the net.

“It was good to see him get a couple of goals, he’s not noted for scoring with his head but took his chances well.

“We’ll have the players back in for training tomorrow and see how their feeling. We’ve got a game at St Johnstone on Tuesday and that’s what we’re now thinking towards.”
