Morten Wieghorst Celtic newsFormer Celt Morten Wieghorst is to take over as coach of the Danish u-21 side in the summer.

Current boss Keld Bordinggaard will step down from the job in June following the UEFA European U21 Championship finals which will be held in Denmark.

Wieghorst is currently managing FC Nordsjælland and guided them to their first ever trophy win beating Midtjylland 2-0 in the final of the Danish Cup at the Parken Stadion.

The midfielder spent six and a half years at Celtic and played under Tommy Burns, Wim Jansen, Jo Venglos, John Barnes and Martin O’Neill before finishing his career in Denmark with Brondby.

During his time at Celtic he bravely battled back from the debilitating illness Guillain-Barre Syndrome which left him virtually paralysed at one stage.

Talking about his new appointment he said: “I then can’t wait to start working with the best young Danish talents and to be part of the group of national coaches at the DBU.

DBU general secretary Jim Stjerne Hansen said: “Morten Wieghorst was our first choice as Keld Bordinggaard’s successor. He has the same philosophy that we have been implementing to develop our players, and which Bordinggaard, among others, helped define.

“We are going to have a new man in charge of the Under-21 team, but we will maintain continuity in the work.”
